Effects Of Colonization On The Africana Continent

Effects of colonization on the Africana continent are undisputed. Valuable natural resources were exploited from the countries by the native people for profit in Europe leaving many with minimum means to survive. Lands and families that had torn apart at the hands of the colonists were trying to be rebuilt. Peoples’ culture and traditions, viewed as barbaric and backward by the powerful Europeans, were once again weaving itself into daily lives. Pride was once again among the people. Jomo Kenyatta, known as the Father of the Kenyan Nation, was a man who came from the land he was fighting to reclaim for himself and his people. Land that was simply taken from them, regardless that generations of their family had lived there. In August 1914 he was baptized with the name Johns tone Kamau. He would later adopt the name Kenyatta from the Kikuyu word for a type of belt he wore, and then the first name Jomo. Around 1922, Jomo Kenyatta left for the urban life of Nairobi and worked as a clerk in the Public Works Department. It was in Nairobi that he became involved in early African protest movements and joined the Kikuyu Central Association (KCA) in 1924. First Pan Kenyan nationalist movement was led by Harry Thuku to protest the white settler dominance in the government. His party, the east African Association, traced it’s roots to the early Kikuyu political groups and was supported by several influential and militant Asians. Thuku was arrested by the colonial authorities in 1922 and was exiled for 7 years. His arrest resulted in the massacre of 23 Africans outside Nairobi’s police station. He was released only after agreeing to cooperate with the colonials, a decision that cost him the leadership of the Kikuyus. Question One: Core Quote In the book Dancing Skeletons: Life and Death In West Africa (published in 1994), the core argument is best shown when the author, Katherine A. Dettwyler, says on page 142, â€Å" What is wrong with this picture?† Suddenly, it dawned on me. The children- dancing with abandon, smiles on their faces looked like dancing skeletons. They were the living embodiment of Camille Saint-Saen’s â€Å"Dance Macabre. â€Å"They were the warrior skeletons from Ray Harryhausen’s film Jason and the Argonauts-dancing, instead of fighting. Question Two: Core Argument I chose this quote because it was the place in which I felt like through all of her research of differing topics from infant feeding practices to the effects and causes of parasites, this was where Dettwyler finally came to a solid conclusion about the lives of the people in West Africa and the role of malnutrition in this society. Dettwyler does come to a lot more different conclusions and argues about various topics throughout the ethnography while conducting her research. But, in my opinion these arguments were not broad enough to be the core argument of the whole ethnography as many of them were only addressing one specific topic that Dettwyler researched.
